Joe Smillie,
NSF/QAI, Senior Vice President
"Update on the American NSF Standard"
Joe Smillie is the Senior Vice-President of Quality Assurance International, a San Diego, California-based certification agency. He manages the company’s Eastern U.S. and Canada Sales, government regulatory affairs, and international business development. QAI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NSF International based in Ann Arbor Michigan. NSF International is a not-for-profit standard setting and certification organization prominent in consumer goods, water and food products.
In January 2006 he was appointed to the National Organic Standards Board to serve a
5 year term as the certification representative.
Joe has served on the NSF/AINSI Joint Committee for Organic Personal Care Products since its inception in 2004
He is co-author of The Soul of Soil- A Guide to Ecological Soil Management; The Orchard Almanac- A Spraysaver Guide; Guidelines for the Organic Foods Industry; and Rodale’s Chemical Free Yard and Garden. Joe has been a consultant in ecological agriculture since 1977, specializing in soil fertility, composting systems, and orchard management.
Mr. Smillie is a founding member of the Organic Trade Association (OTA), and past president of this organization that represents the entire spectrum of the organic industry. He served as the Chair of the OTA International Relations Committee from 1996-2003.
Joe has been instrumental in developing certification systems in North America and worked for many years as an independent certification inspector. He is a founding member of the Independent Organic Inspectors Association (IOIA) and a founding member of the International Inspectors Group (IIG).
In his travels as a consultant, certification inspector, and certification agency representative, Joe has worked with farmers and processors all over North America and in countries such as Mexico, China, Haiti, Turkey, Bolivia, Jamaica, Japan, Argentina, India, and Sri Lanka.
