Croda, Technical Specialist
Julian Hewitt is a Technical Specialist for Croda Suncare & Biopolymers.
Julian graduated from Oxford University in 1988 with an Honours Degree in Chemistry. After graduating, he joined Tioxide, working on new product development from 1988 to 1991. In 1991, he joined Tioxide's Solaveil Business, as Applications Research and Technical Service Manager for physical sunscreen products. He has remained with the Solaveil business as it has moved from Tioxide to ICI Performance Chemicals, and then to Uniqema when the latter was formed in 1999. In 2006, Uniqema was acquired by Croda. This acquisition means that Croda’s extensive range of personal care ingredients now includes inorganic sunscreens, which are widely regarded as a natural option for sun protection as they are based on natural mineral sources. These ingredients are included in Croda’s “Green Guide”, which was launched earlier this year. This guide discusses the various criteria which are used to assess whether an ingredient is “natural”, and provides listings of which Croda products conform to these criteria.
Julian has presented papers and posters at over 30 conferences in venues across the World, and has written or co-authored more than 20 articles and 4 book chapters on formulating sunscreens and in-vitro SPF testing.
